Schools Benefit from Go Green

Lots of large companies talk about carbon offsetting by investing money into environmental organisations that may plant trees or do other carbon offsetting projects.

At Go Green, however, we have decided to take a different approach. We invest 1% of our turnover into the education system. By taking this approach we feel that we may be able to assist in educating young people in environmental matters and become more aware of the environmental challenges which lie ahead. After all it is the youngsters of to-day and their offspring that are really going to feel the effects of climate change in the future.

Back in 2008, when we did our first environmental awards, we invited 51 local schools in or around our home town of Crewe and Nantwich in Cheshire to participate. That year the winning schools were Bridgemere Priamry school and Ruskin Sports and Language College winning a total of £6000.

The second Go Green Environmental Awards were run in 2010. This time 250 schools from South Cheshire, North Staffordshire and North Shropshire were invited to participate. The fund available was £9000.

After 4 months of planning, developing and presenting, 6 local schools knew that they had reached the point of receiving an award, but which one.

The results were announced by David Bramhill, director of G Blackhurst & Son, parent company of Go Green. Edward Timpson, local MP for Crewe and Nantwich made the presentation.

The Primary School Award first place went to Wistaston Church Lane Primary who took home £3000.00 to invest in food recycling facilities and new developments in their outdoor areas for environmental education and leisure activities.

Second place went to Vernon Primary from Poynton with Bridgemere CE Primary (winners in 2008) taking third.

The delighted winners in the Secondary School category were Malbank who had done some amazing work over the past 3 years and now wanted to use their winnings on more recycling equipment and developing their own self grown produce. Second place went to Sir John Talbot Technology College of Whitchurch who are implementing a host of Energy saving measures and third were James Brindley Science College from Chell who were making great strides in the use of bio-diesel fuel.

David Blackhurst, Managing Director of Go Green Car and Van Rental said "I am delighted to see so much fresh and positive thinking in this area and find the enthusiasm of all taking part very inspiring. All of the pupils involved, and the best entries did involve the whole school, are a credit to our education system and the teachers supporting them are to be congratulated in the way that they have facilitated their schools achievements. I must also thank Reaseheath College and Dovey’s Office Solutions for their support in this welcome project "

Edward Timpson was clearly extremely impressed and added "All the entrants have shown innovative and thoughtful approaches to reducing their carbon footprint. I wish the pupils and the schools every success in continuing with this good work. "
